An Apple memo tells stores to inspect and repair or replace iPhone Duo units whose inner display cracks at the hinge. What owners get, what it costs outside coverage, and what iFixit thinks is behind it.

Apple has told its stores and Authorized Service Providers how to handle iPhone Duo units whose inner display cracks at the hinge, one week after its first foldable went on sale. According to a memo reported by MacRumors on October 30, technicians should "inspect the iPhone Duo and repair or replace it in accordance with their standard procedures" when a customer reports the problem.
That is not a recall. Apple has not posted a public repair program for the issue, and it still has not said what is causing the cracks. The leading theory comes from iFixit's teardown and points at the hinge's central support, but iFixit itself says it has no definitive answer yet.
MacRumors reports that Apple shared the memo with Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers this week. The document has not been published, so its contents come from MacRumors' report. If a customer reports a cracked or faulty inner screen, staff are to inspect the phone and then repair or replace it under their standard procedures.
Apple's memo, as MacRumors describes it, says the issue affects a small number of units. Apple says most units are not susceptible, and that affected units show defects fairly quickly after use.
There is no recall, and Apple has not launched a public-facing repair program for this issue on its website. Cases go through Apple's normal service process, one phone at a time.
The memo follows Apple's first public statement on Monday, October 26: "We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement." The same statement added that "the response to iPhone Duo from early users has been incredibly positive."

Owners report one of two symptoms: the inner screen breaks, or horizontal bright lines appear that start at the hinge. If you see either, Apple's guidance and the reporting so far point to these steps:
Every iPhone Duo also carries Apple's one-year warranty, which covers defects from normal use, and new purchases have a 14-day return window, as Tom's Guide noted in coverage cited by Fortune.
Apple's instruction is to contact AppleCare for a replacement. The repair price list matters if an inspection finds accidental damage, or if the phone is outside coverage. Out of coverage, an inner-screen repair costs $999 according to Apple's website, as reported by CNBC. Apple's full fee list, reported by MacRumors on October 14:
The $99 figure is the AppleCare+ accidental-damage fee, not a charge for this defect. For comparison, inner-screen repairs on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold cost $419 to $579, according to an iFixit comparison cited by Fortune.
Apple did design one part of the inner screen to be cheap to fix. The nano-texture cover layer is replaceable and costs $19 with AppleCare+ or $49 without it.
iFixit built a 3D model of the hinge from its teardown footage, Apple's patents and CT scans. "The breaks cluster near the transition from the gap for the crossing flex cable to the central hinge support," according to iFixit's teardown, as covered by MacRumors.
Its working theory is that the curved hinge rails may rise above the flat hinge plates as the phone closes, and one of those rails lines up with the damage. A component that should retract may not be retracting.
iFixit stopped short of a verdict. The possible causes it listed are pressure, a trapped particle, repeated bending or a manufacturing defect. A wiring fault can produce the same symptoms, which means some affected panels may not be physically snapped at all.
iFixit's Shahram Mokhtari told CNBC that many damage reports mention hearing a "crunch" when folding or unfolding the phone, and that the hinge is shaped differently where the damage occurs. iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens put the risk bluntly: "A manufacturing variance or grain of sand can kill the fragile display panel it protects."

The Duo is rated IP68, but in iFixit's test fluorescent dust still reached the hinge and produced a crunching noise that could lead to screen damage. The hinge took in less dust than those of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 or the Pixel 11 Pro Fold. In a separate JerryRigEverything test, dust in the hinge caused the closing magnets to fail.
iFixit gave the Duo a provisional repairability score of 5 out of 10, the highest it has given a foldable. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold both scored 4. A repair manual was available on day one, the outer display comes out intact, and the batteries release with an electrical charge. The weak points are the inner display, a 10-layer stack held in with a lot of adhesive, and the hinge assembly.
Nobody outside Apple knows. Apple only says "a small number of units" and has published no count. 9to5Mac counted about 10 unique cases as of Sunday, October 25, and Bloomberg reported a "growing number of complaints" the next day. Most reports come from anonymous users on Reddit and X, and fake images of cracked screens are circulating alongside real ones.
The first reports surfaced on October 23, launch day, and usually described a line of bright pixels along one side of the hinge. In one account reported by Fortune, an Australian owner's phone cracked after fewer than 20 openings, about six hours after setup, and the owner heard a crack beforehand. That is a single report.
Foldables have been here before. In 2019, reviewers found that the inner screen of Samsung's first folding phone cracked during normal use.
The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable. Unveiled on September 9, it has a 7.6-inch inner display, a 5.4-inch outer display, what Apple calls "a precision hinge", an IP68 rating, the A20 Pro chip and Touch ID in the side button. It starts at $1,999 in the US. Preorders opened on October 16 and the phone went on sale on October 23.

Demand has been strong. Preorders sold out within minutes, and US online ship dates for every configuration have slipped to January 25. Apple called demand "nothing short of extraordinary." Analysts say Samsung Display is the only supplier of the folding panels.
Apple shares fell 1.1% to $343.91 on October 26, the day Apple responded publicly. The company reports fiscal fourth-quarter results on November 2. The Duo was unveiled eight days after John Ternus succeeded Tim Cook as CEO on September 1.
No. There is no recall and no public repair program. Apple has told its stores and authorized service providers to inspect affected phones and repair or replace them under standard procedures.
No, according to 9to5Mac. Apple's public advice is to contact AppleCare for a replacement if the inner display has issues.
Contact AppleCare directly, not the carrier. Use Apple's support website or 1-800-APL-CARE in the US and Canada.
$999, according to Apple's website as reported by CNBC. With AppleCare+ the accidental-damage fee for the inner display is $99. That price list applies to accidental damage and out-of-coverage repairs, not to this defect.
Apple has not said. iFixit's provisional analysis points to the area where the gap for the crossing flex cable meets the central hinge support. It lists pressure, a trapped particle, repeated bending or a manufacturing defect as possible causes, and it notes that a wiring fault can look the same.
