AirVPN Review 2026: Port Forwarding, a 2 EUR Pass and No iOS App

AirVPN is a strong fit for power users: torrenters who need a forwarded port, people behind networks that block OpenVPN, and Linux or Raspberry Pi users who want a real client rather than a config file. It is a weak fit for anyone who wants a polished iPhone app, reliable streaming unblocking or a no-logs claim backed by an independent audit.

AirVPN pricing and plans in 2026

AirVPN prices everything in euros and sells fixed-length plans. Every plan includes every feature, so the only thing you choose is how long you pay for. These are the prices on the AirVPN buy page on September 22, 2026:

• Three days: 2 EUR
• One month: 7 EUR
• Three months: 15 EUR (5 EUR per month)
• Six months: 29 EUR (4.83 EUR per month)
• One year: 49 EUR list, 36.75 EUR with the coupon (3.06 EUR per month)
• Two years: 79 EUR list, 59.25 EUR with the coupon (2.47 EUR per month)
• Three years: 99 EUR list, 74.25 EUR with the coupon (2.06 EUR per month)

Other currencies are shown using European Central Bank exchange rates, but you are billed in euros. Payment options are PayPal, credit cards through Stripe and Amazon Pay, plus Bitcoin, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Dogecoin and Monero, which AirVPN accepts directly without a payment processor in between. You can also buy credit coupons or plan coupons as gifts.

Renewal

Plans are one-off purchases by default: when the time runs out, the account simply stops unless you pay again. That is unusual and welcome in an industry built on auto-renewal. The exception is the optional PayPal subscription, which does recur. According to AirVPN's own forum, you cancel it by deleting the recurring-payment authorization inside your PayPal account; there is no cancel button on the AirVPN site.

Refunds, the three-day pass and cancelling

AirVPN has no free trial. The closest thing is the 2 EUR three-day plan, which is a real paid plan with every feature included. It is a cheap way to test speeds from your own connection and check that the protocols you need get through your network.

Refunds are covered by point 9 of the Terms of Service (last updated October 24, 2024). You are entitled to a full refund if you request it in writing within 30 business days of the payment, and you do not have to give a reason. The right lapses if you have used the service for more than 30 days or broken the Terms of Service. AirVPN commits to paying the refund within 30 days of receiving the request.

Server network and speed capacity

AirVPN publishes a live status page with every server, its load and its bandwidth. On September 22, 2026 it listed 257 servers with a combined capacity of 1,314,000 Mbit/s, carrying about 537,000 Mbit/s for 47,227 connected users. Capacity has grown from roughly 970,000 Mbit/s in mid-2025.

The network is heavily concentrated in Europe and North America:

• Asia: 16 servers (Japan 8, Singapore 7, Taiwan 1)
• Oceania: 4 servers (New Zealand 4)

That is 23 countries in total. There is nothing in Africa, the Middle East, India, Hong Kong or Australia, and only one server in Latin America. If you need an IP address in many countries, NordVPN or Surfshark cover far more locations. If you mostly connect to Europe or North America, the density there is excellent.

AirVPN describes its servers as high-performance physical machines and guarantees a minimum of 4 Mbit/s download and 4 Mbit/s upload per user, with no traffic or time limit. It does not say whether it owns or rents the hardware.

Protocols, encryption and anti-censorship

AirVPN's specs page is unusually specific about what runs on its servers.

WireGuard

WireGuard uses ChaCha20-Poly1305 for data and Curve25519 for key exchange, and AirVPN adds a pre-shared key on every connection for post-quantum resistance. It listens on UDP ports 1637, 47107 and 51820.

OpenVPN

OpenVPN supports ChaCha20-Poly1305 and AES-256-GCM among its data ciphers, 4096-bit RSA and Diffie-Hellman keys, tls-crypt on the control channel and re-keying every 60 minutes. You can connect over TCP or UDP on ports 53, 80, 443, 1194, 2018, 28439, 38915 and 41185, which helps on networks that only allow web traffic. AirVPN has also been rolling out OpenVPN data channel offload (DCO) on its servers.

Getting through blocks

Every AirVPN server also accepts OpenVPN over SSH, over SSL and over Tor, aimed at ISPs and countries that disrupt plain OpenVPN. On Android, Eddie adds AmneziaWG 2.0, an obfuscated WireGuard variant, with 34 ready-made presets. AirVPN also runs its website as a Tor onion service, so you can sign up and manage your account without touching the clearnet site.

Servers support IPv4 and IPv6 tunnels. Outbound port 25 is blocked to prevent spam.

Apps: Eddie, the Linux suite and the missing iOS app

AirVPN's client is Eddie, a free and open-source (GPLv3) wrapper for OpenVPN and WireGuard. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, including ARM boards such as the Raspberry Pi. The current stable desktop release is 2.26.2.

Eddie is built for people who want to see what is going on. It shows per-server load, lets you choose protocol and port, and includes Network Lock, AirVPN's kill switch, which blocks traffic outside the tunnel to prevent leaks. Newcomers may find it busy compared with NordVPN's or ExpressVPN's one-button apps.

Eddie for Android (updated July 30, 2026, 100K+ downloads on Google Play) supports WireGuard, AmneziaWG and OpenVPN, and runs on Android 5.1 and later on phones, tablets and Android TV. Linux users who prefer a command-line daemon can use the AirVPN Suite, with 1.3.0 as the stable release and a 2.0.0 beta.

Privacy, logging and who runs AirVPN

AirVPN is reportedly founded in 2010 by a group of activists and hacktivists, and has reportedly been independent under owner Paolo Brini since 2022. The Terms of Service name the operator as AirVPN di Paolo Brini, a sole proprietorship in Perugia, Italy, subject to the European Court of Justice and the Italian courts.

Signing up needs no personal data, not even a real email address. The Privacy Notice (last updated December 9, 2020) says technical data is handled only in RAM for as long as the service needs it, and that customer traffic, traffic content and IP addresses are not inspected, logged or stored on any mass storage device.

Not available to residents of Italy

AirVPN stopped serving residents of Italy, its own home country, on February 19, 2024. Italy's Piracy Shield rules would have required VPN providers to block sites on demand, and AirVPN chose to leave the market rather than comply. Every page footer still says Italian residents may not use the service.

Port forwarding, P2P and DNS block lists

Port forwarding is AirVPN's best-known feature and the main reason torrent users pick it. You can forward ports through the VPN and attach DDNS names to them, which improves torrent connectivity and lets you run a server at home without exposing your real IP. AirVPN's FAQ indicates that accounts opened since mid-2023 get up to 5 forwarded ports, while older accounts kept a higher allowance.

P2P is allowed on every server, and AirVPN says it does not discriminate against any service, protocol or application.

AirVPN's DNS servers never alter requests by default. You can opt in to third-party block lists for ads, trackers and malicious domains, either for the whole account or per device. AirVPN adds no domains of its own and only uses lists with open licenses. DNS over HTTPS and DNS over TLS are available at dns.airservers.org.

Streaming

AirVPN makes no promise about unblocking Netflix, Disney+ or BBC iPlayer, and its specs mention only general anti-geolocation features. Treat streaming as a bonus if it works on a given server, not a reason to buy.

Who should choose something else

• iPhone and iPad users: pick a provider with a native iOS app, such as Mullvad or Proton VPN
• Streamers: services that actively maintain streaming unblocking, like NordVPN or ExpressVPN, are a better bet
• Anyone who needs audited no-logs: Mullvad and Proton VPN both publish independent audits
• Users who need servers in Africa, the Middle East, India or Australia: AirVPN has none
• Residents of Italy: the Terms of Service do not allow you to use AirVPN

Mullvad is the closest like-for-like alternative: also privacy-first, also no email needed, also accepts cash and Monero. It is audited and has an iOS app, but it removed port forwarding in 2023, which is exactly where AirVPN stays ahead.
