Technology reviews & practical guides
NordVPN sells four tiers on three billing terms, and the advertised price only covers the first one. What each plan adds, what renewal costs and how refunds work.

NordVPN advertises a price of around three dollars a month. That figure is an average: it belongs to the cheapest of four tiers, on the longest commitment, paid as a single charge covering more than two years, for the first term only. Almost nobody pays three dollars a month for the second term.
This guide separates the four things that decide what NordVPN actually costs you: which tier you pick, how long you commit, what the subscription renews at, and where you buy it. Prices below were checked on 16 August 2026 against United States listings; NordVPN reprices frequently and runs regional promotions, so treat them as a shape rather than a quote and confirm the total at checkout.
Basic, Plus, Complete and Prime all deliver the same virtual private network. Same server network, same NordLynx protocol, same ten simultaneous connections, same apps. Nothing you pay extra for makes the tunnel faster or the no-logs policy stronger. The tiers differ only in how many other Nord Security products are bundled alongside the VPN, which means the honest way to choose is to ask which of those products you would otherwise buy. Tier names and contents have also shifted more than once, and NordVPN renamed its filtering features during 2026, so a comparison table written last year may describe a lineup that no longer exists.
A password manager and a terabyte of encrypted storage cost real money on their own, so the higher tiers can be good value. They are poor value the moment you buy them and keep using your existing tools. Price the bundle against what you already pay, not against the VPN-only tier.
NordVPN sells one-month, one-year and two-year subscriptions. Its own support pages are explicit that the yearly and two-year plans have to be paid in full at purchase; only the one-month plan is genuinely paid monthly. So the per-month figure on the pricing page is arithmetic, not a bill. Promotional two-year offers are usually sold as twenty-seven months, with the extra three months folded into one payment rather than added later.
The pattern matters more than the exact cents. Paying month to month costs about four times the two-year rate, and the gap between the cheapest and dearest tier on the same term is smaller than the gap between terms. Commitment length, not tier, is the main lever on price, and the money you save is money you have handed over in advance and can only recover through the refund policy. If you are travelling for six weeks and want protection on hotel networks, two months at the monthly rate still costs less than a year paid upfront, and it ends by itself when you stop paying.
Every discount applies to your first term. NordVPN states that at the end of the initial plan the subscription renews automatically at the applicable renewal price, which it publishes on a separate renewal pricing page and says it announces by email beforehand. That renewal rate is not the promotional rate, and the promotional rate does not come back for existing customers. Someone who signed up at three dollars a month should expect the second term to look nothing like the first. Look the figure up before you buy, not after: the renewal page is public, and comparing it against the introductory total tells you the two-term cost of the decision you are actually making.
These are two separate actions with two separate outcomes. Turning off auto-renewal in your Nord Account stops the next charge and leaves your access running until the term ends. Getting money back requires a refund request through support, and only within the window described below.
This is also where NordVPN has drawn legal fire. Through the first half of 2026 the company was named in several United States class actions, including one filed in Virginia in April, alleging deceptive automatic-renewal practices: renewal terms buried in fine print, charges taken up to two weeks before a term ends, and cancellation flows that are hard to find. The allegations are untested and no settlement has been reported, but the practical lesson stands on its own. Put the renewal date in your calendar the day you subscribe, a few weeks early, and decide then rather than after the charge lands.
The thirty-day money-back guarantee is narrower than the marketing suggests. NordVPN's refund policy applies it to your initial subscription purchase only: once a subscription has renewed, that payment is no longer eligible under the guarantee unless local law says otherwise. Refunds are requested through live chat, after which support sends a verification link and eligible payments show a refund button. There is no free trial on the website; the only trial is a short Android one run by Google Play under Google's terms, limited to one per customer and cancelled through Google rather than through NordVPN. Treat the guarantee as the trial, and use the first fortnight to test the things that are hard to undo later: streaming on your own television, speed on your own connection, and whether the kill switch behaves on your operating system.
