PrivateVPN is a small Swedish VPN run by PrivateVPN Global AB and, since June 2022, owned by Miss Group, a hosting group backed by the private-equity firm Perwyn. Its pitch is simple: 10 devices, 200+ servers, WireGuard, obfuscation for restrictive networks, port forwarding for torrenting and a headline price of 2.00 USD a month.
That headline price is where this review starts, because it is not what most buyers expect. The 2.00 USD figure is 72.00 USD paid upfront for 36 months, which then renews at 72.00 USD a year. The "100% money back guarantee" also has more conditions than the homepage suggests. We read the pricing page, the terms of use, the privacy policy and the help centre to separate the offer from the fine print.
The short verdict
PrivateVPN is a competent, low-cost VPN with a few genuinely useful extras - port forwarding, Stealth VPN obfuscation, 10 simultaneous connections and remote setup help over TeamViewer. It is a reasonable pick for torrenting and for people who want a hand installing their VPN.
Its weak points are trust and transparency rather than features. There is no independent no-logs audit, no in-app split tunnelling, the kill switch has been reported to leak during server changes, and the refund terms contradict each other across three vendor pages. If an audited no-logs policy matters to you, this is not the VPN to choose.

What the 2 USD deal really costs
PrivateVPN prices everything in USD, including VAT. The homepage lists three plans. None of the prices carry a "last updated" date, so check the checkout page before you pay.
- 1 month: 9.90 USD billed every month.
- 3 months: 17.99 USD billed every 3 months (6.00 USD a month).
- 36 months ("12 Months + 24 Months extra"): 72.00 USD upfront (2.00 USD a month), then 72.00 USD billed every 12 months.
The long plan is really a 12-month plan with 24 free months attached. After the first 36 months it renews at 72.00 USD a year, which works out to 6.00 USD a month - exactly the same monthly rate as the 3-month plan. Over four years you would pay 144.00 USD, an average of 3.00 USD a month, not 2.00 USD.
Renewal is automatic
The terms of use say subscriptions "renew automatically by default at the completion of the initial subscription term". Auto-renewal is switched off only when you pay with a method that does not support it, such as Bitcoin. Set a reminder before month 36 if you do not want to be charged again.
There is also some stale pricing in PrivateVPN's own help centre: its FAQ, updated in June 2026, still says "Plans start at $12 per month", while the website charges 9.90 USD for a single month. Treat the website price as current.
Payment methods are listed differently depending on the page. The FAQ mentions credit and debit cards, PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay and cryptocurrencies; the terms mention PayPal, Stripe and Bitcoin. Crypto payments are non-refundable.
The money-back guarantee fine print
The homepage says "ALL PrivateVPN subscriptions are protected by a 100% money back guarantee." The money-back page and the terms of use narrow that considerably.
- It is a 30-day guarantee for new customers only, requested by email to support.
- You must give a reason. The money-back page says "Reason for the refund needs to be provided!", although the help-centre FAQ says refunds are given regardless of the reason.
- Timing differs: the money-back page promises processing within 5 business days, the terms say no later than 14 days.
- Renewals are excluded - a subscription that has already auto-renewed is not covered.
- Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency payments are non-refundable.
- App Store in-app purchases are not covered; refunds go through Apple at its discretion.
- Upgrading to a longer term or adding licences on the same account waives the refund.
Check before buying a short plan
The terms also say the refund provision "is not applicable on contractual amounts lower than SEK 400/ USD 45". The 1-month (9.90 USD) and 3-month (17.99 USD) plans are both below that. The sentence sits right after the App Store rule, so it is unclear whether it limits the whole refund right or only the App Store clause. If you plan to test PrivateVPN on a short plan, ask support in writing first. The 72.00 USD long plan is above the threshold.
There is no free trial listed on any PrivateVPN page we checked. The 30-day refund on the long plan, paid by card or PayPal, is the realistic way to try the service.
Devices, servers and protocols
Each subscription covers up to 10 devices at the same time, which is generous for a VPN in this price range. PrivateVPN claims "over 200 servers in 63 countries" on its homepage, while its own FAQ says 200+ servers in 43 countries. Our count of the public server list found 83 city entries across 62 countries, so the 63-country figure is close, but the FAQ number is out of date.
Protocols and encryption
The apps support WireGuard (ChaCha20), OpenVPN and IKEv2 (both AES-256), plus AnyConnect, IPSec, L2TP and PPTP for older devices. PPTP uses 128-bit MPPE and should be treated as legacy only - avoid it unless nothing else works.
Stealth VPN
Stealth VPN is PrivateVPN's obfuscation mode for networks that block VPNs or use deep packet inspection. It is available on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. The Windows app warns that it "may slow down your network", and iOS lets you switch the Stealth port between 22 and 443.
Kill switch and Application Guard
A kill switch is built into the Windows (called Connection Guard), macOS and Android apps. On iOS, PrivateVPN tells you to use IKEv2, which has a built-in kill switch. Windows also gets Application Guard, which closes chosen programs if the VPN drops. DNS and IPv6 leak protection are included in all the apps.
Port forwarding and dedicated IPs
Port forwarding is available on selected servers and protocols, and the app shows the randomly assigned port - useful for seeding torrents. PrivateVPN also offers shared static IPs on all locations and dynamic dedicated IPs on selected locations through a Dedicated IP tab, at no extra charge that we could find.
Privacy, logging and ownership
PrivateVPN Global AB is registered in Sweden (reg. no. 559282-2182) and its terms are governed by Swedish law. Its privacy policy, last updated on 16 October 2023, says it does not log browsing history, traffic destination, connection timestamps, DNS queries, IP addresses, data content or bandwidth.
What it does keep is your email address and password. Payment processors see the date of purchase, your IP address, postcode, full name and card details, and the policy allows disclosure to comply with a decision of a public authority or court.
No independent audit
PrivateVPN has not published an independent no-logs audit and does not claim one. We found no court case or data request that tested its policy either. The no-logs promise rests on the company's word alone.
Ownership is worth knowing about. Miss Group bought PrivateVPN in June 2022, its fourth acquisition that year, and the founder left after the deal. Miss Group is backed by Perwyn. We found no further ownership change through 2026.
Streaming, torrenting and third-party tests
PrivateVPN says it unlocks the US Netflix catalogue, lets you switch Netflix regions and works with BBC iPlayer from abroad. P2P is described as "unlimited", though the company does not say whether every server allows it.
We did not run our own speed or streaming tests for this review. Top10VPN's review, updated in August 2026, reported roughly 96 Mbps on local connections and 82 Mbps internationally, Netflix working in 10 regions alongside BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Prime Video, HBO Max and Sky Go, and failures with Disney+ UK and JioHotstar. The same review found the kill switch leaked its IP address while changing servers, and an IPv6 leak on Linux.
Those results suggest decent everyday speed and good streaming coverage, but the kill switch finding matters if you torrent: disconnect before switching servers rather than relying on the app to hold the line.
Apps, platforms and support
PrivateVPN lists Windows (7 SP1 and later), macOS 12 and later, Linux, iOS, Android, Chrome OS and routers, plus an Amazon Fire TV app and NAS guides. There is no Apple TV app; PrivateVPN suggests running the VPN on your router instead. Help guides for WireGuard, Stealth VPN, Fire TV and dedicated IPs were refreshed in 2025 and 2026, so the apps are still maintained.
Support is where PrivateVPN stands out. Alongside live chat and email, it offers remote installation over TeamViewer for Windows, Mac and Linux. That is unusual and genuinely helpful for less technical users, though you should be comfortable giving support staff temporary remote access to your computer.
