WPMU DEV Review 2026: Pro Plugins, Premium and Unlimited Hosting Priced Out

Verdict at a glance

WPMU DEV is at its best for freelancers and agencies that look after many client sites and want plugins, site management, hosting, white label reporting and client billing in one account. Premium at $9.99/month is cheap for what it unlocks, and Unlimited Hosting brings the hosting cost per site down to cents. The trade-off is lock-in: your plugins keep working if you leave, but your hosting and backup data do not stay reachable.

What WPMU DEV actually sells

WPMU DEV is run by Incsub, a remote company. It bundles four things under one account: a suite of 11 Pro plugins, The Hub site manager, managed WordPress hosting, and a set of reseller and client tools. The pricing page is blunt about the first part: 'Every plan includes the complete Pro plugin suite.' Plans differ by site count, storage and business features, not by which plugins you get.

The Hub is the control center. WPMU DEV says it lets you 'Update plugins, themes, and WordPress core / Monitor uptime and performance / Run security scans / Automate maintenance tasks / Generate and send client reports'. Sites hosted anywhere can be connected, so you can use The Hub and the plugins without moving any hosting.

The company's own framing on the pricing page is 'Start with Pro plugin plans. Move to Premium when you're ready to replace your stack.' That is a fair description of the intended path: plugins first, then hosting and agency tools once you are committed.

The 11 Pro plugins

The suite covers most of what a typical client site needs from separate paid plugins:

• Smush Pro - image compression and lazy loading
• Hummingbird Pro - page caching and asset optimization
• Forminator Pro - forms, quizzes and polls
• Defender Pro - security scanning, firewall and audit log
• SmartCrawl Pro - SEO

• Beehive Pro - Google Analytics dashboards
• IVT Pro - the newest name in the suite

The plugin plans also carry storage limits. Each Pro card lists 50GB on the 119-point CDN and 5GB of backup storage. Premium lifts both to unlimited: 'Unlimited CDN and backup storage for sites hosted anywhere.'

Pricing: Pro plans vs Premium

There are now two kinds of plan. The Pro plugin plans are billed per year and priced by site count. Premium is billed per month and removes the site limit.

• Pro Basic: 1 site, $50/year
• Pro Standard: 3 sites, $75/year
• Pro Plus: 10 sites, $100/year
• Premium: unlimited sites, $9.99/month, $4.99/month for the first 3 months

Premium adds, per the pricing card: an unlimited sites license, Unlimited Hosting access, 50% off Dedicated Hosting, unlimited CDN and backups, 'Automated white label reseller', a '0% commission billing system', unlimited team members, a white label CRM, 24/7 support and on-demand development. The Premium page adds wholesale domains, 50% off Pro Email and SOC 2 Type II certification.

What changed since 2025

A Wayback Machine snapshot of the pricing page from 17 June 2025 shows the old ladder: Basic, Standard, Plus and Premium at list prices of $15, $25, $50 and $100 per month, advertised on yearly billing from $1.50 to $10 per month, with Premium including $12 of free monthly hosting credits ($144 a year). That hosting credit bundle no longer appears on the current page. We found no announcement of the restructure, so all we can say is that it happened after mid-2025.

Dedicated Hosting: one site per server

Dedicated Hosting is WPMU DEV's classic managed WordPress hosting: 'One site. Fully isolated. No resource sharing.' Each site gets 'Exclusive CPU and RAM', and a 'Dedicated IP from 30 Global Locations'. There are 15 tiers. A selection, monthly, with the regular (Default) price first and the Premium member price second:

• Quantum: 512MB RAM, 1 vCPU, 10GB (4GB usable) - $8 / $4
• Bronze: 1GB RAM, 1 vCPU, 25GB (15GB usable) - $24 / $12
• Bronze Max: 2GB RAM, 1 vCPU, 64GB (40GB usable) - $46 / $23
• Silver: 2GB RAM, 2 vCPU, 65GB (45GB usable) - $60 / $30
• Silver Max: 4GB RAM, 2 vCPU, 128GB (100GB usable) - $90 / $45
• Gold: 8GB RAM, 4 vCPU, 160GB (135GB usable) - $120 / $60
• Platinum: 16GB RAM, 6 vCPU, 320GB (285GB usable) - $240 / $120
• Titanium: 64GB RAM, 16 vCPU, 1280GB (1180GB usable) - $1000 / $500
• Palladium: 96GB RAM, 24 vCPU, 1600GB (1500GB usable) - $1600 / $800

Hosting is billed separately from the membership. The Premium page puts it plainly: Premium 'comes with a 50% discount on hosting', and the plan tables note that the lower prices are for Premium members. The break-even is easy to work out: if your hosting would cost at least $19.98/month at Default prices, the 50% saving covers the $9.99 Premium fee. One Bronze site already clears that bar ($24 Default vs $12 + $9.99 = $21.99 with Premium). A single Quantum site does not.

Unlimited Hosting: 50+ sites on one server

Unlimited Hosting launched on 27 April 2026 and is the reason Premium is now worth a serious look for agencies. Instead of one site per server, you get a managed multi-site server and install as many WordPress sites as it can carry. WPMU DEV pitches it as 'Run 50+ WordPress sites on one server from $15/month.' Monthly prices, Default then Premium:

• Alpha MU: 50+ sites, 1GB RAM, 1 HF-vCPU, 23GB usable - $30 / $15
• Beta MU: 100+ sites, 2GB RAM, 1 vCPU, 47GB usable - $46 / $23
• Gamma MU: 200+ sites, 4GB RAM, 2 vCPU, 105GB usable - $90 / $45
• Delta MU: 500+ sites, 16GB RAM, 4 vCPU, 344GB usable - $300 / $150
• Zeta MU: 600+ sites, 24GB RAM, 6 vCPU, 400GB usable - $400 / $200
• Eta MU: 700+ sites, 32GB RAM, 8 vCPU, 455GB usable - $600 / $300

All six list 'Unmetered' bandwidth and 'Unlimited Visitors'. The launch post adds that 'if you cancel a server halfway through the month... we'll pro-rata refund you', which is friendlier than the membership refund rules.

OpenClaw AI agents and EmDash sites

Since 3 August 2026 an Unlimited server can also run OpenClaw AI agents. WPMU DEV's launch post says: 'If you're a WPMU DEV Premium member, then this is available for you right now on your Unlimited Hosting server at no extra cost, for as many installs as you want.' They run 'next to EmDash in your Unlimited Hosting server'. EmDash, Cloudflare's CMS, also has its own hosting listing at $30/month Default and $15/month Premium, with 'Install and host as many EmDash sites as you want.'

Infrastructure, backups and staging

WPMU DEV describes the hosting stack as an 'optimized LEMP stack with FastCGI caching, Object cache and dedicated PHP workers, plus 3GHz+ Xeon CPUs and NVMe SSD storage'. What comes with every hosted site:

• 30 data centers across North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Australia, from Toronto and Mexico City to Johannesburg, Tel Aviv, Mumbai and Sydney
• A built-in 119-point CDN, with 'No Cloudflare required'
• Free SSL, a web application firewall, DDoS protection and malware scanning
• Nightly automatic backups to offsite AWS storage on a ZFS file system, kept for 30 days, with hourly backups as a $5/month add-on
• Free staging: 'Staging is included free with our hosting.'

WPMU DEV's pages do not name the cloud provider underneath. Vultr does: its blog announced on 17 June 2024 that 'WPMU DEV is now part of the Vultr Cloud Alliance Partner Program'. WPMU DEV previously ran on DigitalOcean.

Bandwidth is the murkiest point. The Dedicated plan table says 'Unmetered', but the Quantum card and the tech specs page list transfer allowances from 5TB up to 250TB. The terms of service say 'We do not place any hard limits on traffic, visits, or bandwidth.' If your sites push heavy traffic, get the applicable limit confirmed in writing.

We did not run our own load or speed tests for this review, so we make no performance claims beyond the published specifications.

White label, client billing and email

The agency features are what separate WPMU DEV from a plain host. With Premium you get:

• White label: 'Remove or replace WPMU DEV branding within plugins' and 'Brand client reports with your own logo and colors.' WPMU DEV itself adds 'While it's not a fully custom-built platform...', so expect branding, not a bespoke portal.
• A client portal and support system: 'White label portal and fully-featured support system for your clients.'
• Client billing with 0% fees for Premium members; 'Other plans include a 7.5% fee'.
• Unlimited team members with a 'Complete team management system'.
• Reseller products that are 'wholesale-priced for greater margins', although the wholesale figures are not published.
• Wholesale domains.

Email

Hosting includes Basic Email: '10 free emails per site included in hosting package', but WPMU DEV retains only 100MB of email on its server. Pro Email is the paid mailbox product, priced per account per month for Pro members, with Premium members paying half: 5GB $2 / $1, 10GB $4 / $2, 25GB $10 / $5, 50GB $20 / $10. Each account has 'a limit of 500 emails sent per day', so it is for people, not newsletters.

Support, uptime SLA and recent incidents

According to WPMU DEV, 'Premium members get 24/7 support from WordPress experts via live chat and tickets inside The Hub', with an average first response time under 2 minutes, VIP priority and a Dedicated Account Manager. It also claims '97% of customers rate support as excellent.' These are vendor claims; we did not test response times.

The terms of service promise 'a 99.9% uptime SLA', which allows roughly 43 minutes of downtime in a 30-day month. Credits are '5% of your monthly hosting charges for each full hour of downtime beyond the SLA' and cannot exceed 100% of the monthly charge. Downtime caused by traffic spikes is excluded.

The public status page shows the kind of incidents you would expect from a platform this size. On 13 September 2026 an 'SSL Certificate Issue with Upstream Email Provider' affected the APIs and Pro Email from 01:33 to 06:01 UTC. The Hub and the WPMU DEV site had scheduled maintenance on 14 August 2026.

Refunds, cancellation and lock-in

This is the section to read before you move client sites. The key rules, from the pricing page, the money-back page and the terms of service:

• There is no free trial. The risk-free option is a 30-day money-back guarantee that 'covers the first 30 days from your payment date'.
• 'Refunds are available once per person or entity', so you cannot trial it twice.
• 'No refunds whatsoever will be given for scheduled subscription payments after 30 days.'
• Domain registration, renewal, transfer and redemption fees are not refundable.
• Paid services 'are automatically renewed'. Cancelling is one click, and the membership stays active until the end of the billing cycle.
• Unlimited Hosting servers cancelled mid-month are refunded pro rata, per the launch post.
• Free hosted sites, or sites paid for with promotional credit, 'may be archived after 21 days of inactivity.'

What it costs in practice

Four worked examples, using the published prices and excluding taxes, domains, Pro Email and hourly backup add-ons:

1. Freelancer with 3 client sites hosted elsewhere, plugins only: Pro Standard at $75/year, about $6.25/month. Client billing through WPMU DEV would carry the 7.5% fee.
2. One business site on Bronze Dedicated Hosting: $24/month ($288/year) at the Default price, or $12 + $9.99 = $21.99/month ($263.88/year) with Premium, which also adds unlimited plugin licenses.
3. Agency with 50 small sites on Alpha MU: $15 + $9.99 = $24.99/month, about $0.50 per site including the membership. First-year total: $104.88 for Premium (3 months at $4.99 and 9 at $9.99) plus $180 hosting = $284.88.
4. Agency with 500 sites on Delta MU: $150 + $9.99 = $159.99/month, about $0.32 per site including the membership.

WPMU DEV's own navigation quotes a cost 'from ~$0.22/m' per site. We could not reproduce that from the listed minimum site counts: the lowest hosting-only figure we get is $0.30 per site on both Alpha MU (50 sites) and Delta MU (500 sites). Because the counts are written as '50+', '500+' and so on, the vendor figure presumably assumes more sites per server. Treat it as a best case and test how many of your own sites a server really holds.

Who should pick WPMU DEV, and who should not

Pick it if

• You manage dozens or hundreds of small and mid-size WordPress sites and want one bill for plugins, hosting and client management.
• You already pay for separate caching, security, SEO, forms and backup plugins on each site.
• You resell hosting and maintenance and want white label reports and 0% client billing fees.
• You want only the plugins: the $50 to $100 per year Pro plans are cheap for the full suite.

Look elsewhere if

• You run one high-traffic store and care more about independently benchmarked performance and enterprise support than about agency tools; compare premium managed hosts such as Kinsta, WP Engine or Pagely.
• You cannot accept hosting and backup data becoming unreachable when a membership lapses.
• You need published wholesale prices or a published annual Premium price before committing.
• You want a free trial rather than a one-time 30-day refund.
